CharIN Head Predicts Long Coexistence of J3400 (Tesla NACS) and CCS Charging Standards

Admin

As the EV industry evolves, the coexistence of multiple charging standards remains a topic of discussion.

The Charging Interface Initiative North America (CharIN) has been actively involved in standardizing Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS), now known as SAE J3400, alongside the existing CCS (Combined Charging System).

Despite initial concerns, CharIN Executive Director Erika Myers believes that both standards will coexist for many years.

Standardization Efforts

CharIN has been working with SAE, automakers, and other stakeholders to standardize J3400. This effort involves over 300 contributors in the North American Charging Interoperability Task Force.

The goal is to ensure that J3400 meets consumer needs for reliable and effective charging. The publication of a Technical Information Report last December marked a significant step toward developing the standard.

Adapters and Safety

One of CharIN's ongoing concerns is the use of adapters, which they believe are not ideal for consumers. To address potential safety challenges, CharIN has released an adapter safety statement regarding J3400/J1772 adapters. The organization expects to publish the full standard sometime this summer.

Tesla's Role

Tesla’s decision to open its Supercharger network to non-Tesla EVs has been a significant development.

While this move has introduced some unpredictability, CharIN continues to focus on improving the standard and ensuring interoperability.

Despite the changes within Tesla, the process of standardizing J3400 and ensuring its coexistence with CCS will continue.

Industry Impact

The coexistence of J3400 and CCS is seen as a pragmatic approach given the millions of CCS-equipped EVs already on the road.

CharIN's collaborative efforts with key industry players aim to provide a reliable charging infrastructure that supports both standards, ultimately benefiting consumers and accelerating EV adoption.
