ComEd Announces $100 Million EV Rebate Program to Expand Charging and Electrification in Northern Illinois

ComEd has announced a new $100 million rebate program designed to accelerate electric vehicle adoption and charging infrastructure across northern Illinois. Revealed at the Chicago Auto Show, this initiative is part of a broader effort to make EV ownership more affordable and to expand charging accessibility for businesses, public sector entities, and individual consumers. This program aligns with Illinois’ long-term climate goals and follows previous investments by ComEd in clean energy and electrification.

The funding is structured to address three key areas. The largest portion, totaling $53 million, will support businesses and public sector entities in acquiring electric fleet vehicles. This includes financial assistance for small businesses that are looking to add electric vehicles to their operations, whether for logistics, delivery services, or passenger transportation. By helping to offset the cost of fleet electrification, ComEd aims to encourage more companies to transition away from gasoline and diesel vehicles, reducing emissions and operational costs in the long run.

Infrastructure upgrades are also a major focus of the program. Nearly $38 million has been set aside for expanding charging infrastructure, specifically for non-residential customers. This funding will assist businesses, municipalities, and institutions in installing Level 2 and Level 3 charging stations to serve employees, customers, and fleet vehicles. As the demand for public and private charging access increases, expanding the charging network will be crucial in supporting the growing number of electric vehicles on Illinois roads.

Residential customers are not left out of the program. Approximately $9 million has been allocated to help homeowners install Level 2 home charging stations. Rebates of up to $3,750 per charger will be available to eligible customers, reducing the upfront cost of purchasing and installing home charging equipment. With a significant portion of EV owners relying on home charging as their primary energy source, this investment is expected to make EV ownership more practical and convenient for consumers in northern Illinois.

This rebate program builds upon ComEd’s previous investments in EV infrastructure and adoption. In 2024, ComEd committed nearly $90 million toward similar initiatives, reflecting the company’s continued push to facilitate the transition to electric transportation. The latest round of funding is part of Illinois’ broader effort to reach one million EVs on the state’s roads by 2030, as outlined in the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act. By making EVs more affordable and ensuring that charging infrastructure keeps pace with demand, ComEd and state officials hope to accelerate progress toward this goal.

Equity is a central component of the rebate program, with more than half of the total funds being directed toward low-income customers and communities that have historically faced barriers to EV adoption. Higher rebate amounts will be available exclusively for low-income customers and those living in equity-eligible areas, ensuring that the benefits of electric transportation are accessible to a wider range of residents. In many cases, disadvantaged communities have borne the brunt of transportation-related pollution, and this initiative seeks to address those disparities by making cleaner vehicles a viable option for more people.

Since launching its initial EV rebate program, ComEd has supported electrification projects in more than 300 ZIP codes across northern Illinois. This support has helped fund nearly 3,500 residential and commercial charging ports, as well as over 200 new and pre-owned EV fleet vehicles for municipalities, businesses, and school districts. More than half of these funds have been directed toward low-income customers and equity-eligible communities, reinforcing the commitment to making EV adoption inclusive and equitable.

The impact of these investments is already being felt on Illinois roads. More than 126,000 electric vehicles are now registered in the state, with over 112,000 operating in northern Illinois alone. This growing number of EVs underscores the importance of continued investment in charging networks and financial incentives to sustain momentum in the shift toward electrification.

ComEd’s $100 million rebate program is expected to further accelerate EV adoption and infrastructure development by reducing financial barriers for businesses, homeowners, and public institutions. As Illinois moves closer to its goal of one million EVs on the road by 2030, initiatives like this will be critical in ensuring that infrastructure keeps up with demand and that residents across all income levels have the opportunity to participate in the transition to electric mobility.
