EVgo Opens the First Charging Stations Deployed Through Toyota’s Empact Project

In a major step toward enhancing the accessibility and convenience of EV charging, EVgo has opened the first charging stations deployed through Toyota’s Empact project. This collaboration between EVgo and Toyota is a significant milestone in expanding charging infrastructure, especially for underserved communities. The first two stations, located in Baldwin Park and Sacramento, California, are now operational and feature 350 kW DC fast chargers, providing an essential service for electric vehicle (EV) owners on the go.

The Empact project was first announced in April 2023 as part of Toyota's broader strategy to promote sustainability and electric vehicle adoption. With this initiative, Toyota aims to increase the availability of charging stations in areas that may have otherwise been neglected, particularly those in need of more accessible EV infrastructure. These stations will not only serve Toyota EV owners but will be open to all EVs, further encouraging the adoption of electric mobility across the region.

EVgo, a leader in public fast charging, is responsible for the installation and operation of these stations. The first two Empact sites in California each have the capacity to serve up to eight vehicles simultaneously. This provides more options for EV drivers who need fast, reliable charging during their journeys. The inclusion of 350 kW fast chargers is a crucial feature, as it enables rapid charging, which is essential for longer trips and for drivers who need to quickly get back on the road.

Expanding Charging Access to Underserved Communities

One of the key goals of the Empact project is to increase access to EV charging in underserved communities. Many areas in the U.S. still suffer from a lack of charging infrastructure, particularly those that are not located along major highways or in urban centers. Toyota and EVgo's collaboration addresses this gap by placing new charging stations in amenity-rich areas that are easily accessible to the general public. These locations include grocery stores, shopping malls, and restaurants, providing a convenient way for EV drivers to charge their vehicles while also running errands or enjoying a meal.

This initiative is especially important as the EV market continues to grow and as more consumers make the transition to electric vehicles. By investing in infrastructure that supports EV adoption, Toyota and EVgo are helping to make EV ownership more practical and accessible for a larger number of consumers. This also aligns with the goal of reducing emissions and promoting cleaner forms of transportation, which is critical in the fight against climate change.

Additional Benefits for Toyota EV Owners

As part of its commitment to the project, Toyota is also offering an additional benefit to drivers of its 2025 Toyota bZ4X, an all-electric SUV. One year of complimentary charging is available for those who purchase or lease the bZ4X, providing added value to Toyota’s electric vehicle customers. The Toyota app enables users to easily locate the new Empact stations and access the complimentary charging offer, making it even easier for Toyota owners to integrate electric vehicles into their everyday lives.

This initiative not only supports the adoption of Toyota’s EV models, such as the bZ4X, but also strengthens the broader network of public charging infrastructure, making it easier for all EV drivers to access fast and reliable charging services.

Looking to the Future

The Empact project marks a key development in the effort to expand electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the U.S. and beyond. With more locations planned for the future, the project is expected to increase charging availability in areas that have previously lacked such services, especially in underserved communities. This expansion is critical as EV adoption continues to grow, and the need for accessible, convenient charging infrastructure becomes more pressing.

The collaboration between Toyota and EVgo could set a precedent for other automakers and charging providers to work together on initiatives that promote widespread EV adoption and make electric mobility a reality for a broader range of consumers. The future of the electric vehicle market depends on accessible charging infrastructure, and projects like Empact are key to building that infrastructure.
