Pilot Flying J has hit a significant milestone in its nationwide EV charging expansion, reaching 200 travel centers across 38 U.S. states equipped with fast chargers. This achievement reflects a broader trend in the EV ecosystem: long-haul and regional travel are finally becoming more accessible for electric vehicle drivers. For many, one of the largest barriers to EV adoption has been range anxiety and inconsistent charging infrastructure. Pilot Flying J’s network helps address that, offering coverage across key interstate routes where charging options were previously limited.

The Stats

At the 200-site mark, the network boasts 807 fast charging stalls, representing nearly a quarter of the company’s total travel centers. Convenience and usability were clearly top priorities in the design. Nearly half of the sites (48%) have canopies, offering protection from the elements—a feature rarely matched by other fast charging networks. Pull-through charging, available at 29% of the locations, makes it easier for larger vehicles and trailers to access the stations without complicated maneuvers. While Rivian’s Adventure Network may have a higher percentage of pull-through sites, Pilot Flying J’s approach ensures multiple stalls at each location are trailer-friendly, supporting a broader range of vehicles.

Pricing remains competitive, with an average of $0.58 per kWh and a range from $0.45 to $0.69 per kWh depending on the site. Most stations follow a standard configuration of four stalls served by two 350kW dispensers, but a handful of locations include a third dispenser to accommodate CHAdeMO-equipped vehicles or increase overall charging capacity. Notably, the new Wildwood, Florida location offers six ports, signaling a potential trend toward larger, higher-capacity sites in the future.

The Commitment

Reaching the initial 200-site milestone ahead of the originally targeted end-of-2024 timeline underscores Pilot Flying J’s commitment to expanding EV accessibility. The next phase of the rollout is ambitious: equipping 500 travel centers, which would cover approximately 60% of the company’s North American locations. This expansion demonstrates that EV infrastructure growth is no longer limited to urban areas or early adopter markets—it’s becoming a fixture along major travel corridors nationwide.

Beyond just numbers, this milestone signals a shift in the way infrastructure providers are thinking about the EV experience. By prioritizing user-friendly features like sheltered stalls and trailer-accessible pull-throughs, Pilot Flying J is acknowledging that EV drivers have diverse needs, from daily commuters to long-haul transport operators. The network also reflects a broader industry push toward interoperability and standardization. As operators like Pilot Flying J expand their charging options the public may lose its “range anxiety” and keep the move to electric vehicles growing and CHARGING.
