Rivian has just unveiled its first batch of next-generation chargers, marking a significant step in the company’s efforts to expand its Adventure Network. Originally designed exclusively for Rivian vehicles, these new stations are now open to electric vehicles (EVs) from other manufacturers, but with a catch: vehicles equipped with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) will need an adapter for the time being.
A Shift Towards Inclusivity
Rivian’s Adventure Network has been a point of focus for the electric vehicle startup since its inception, with the primary goal of creating a robust charging infrastructure to support its R1T and R1S models, among others. However, Rivian has now pledged to open up the network to vehicles using Tesla’s NACS, marking an important shift towards inclusivity. The change reflects Rivian’s commitment to making EV ownership more accessible, even though the transition is not yet seamless.
The new stations will still utilize the Combined Charging System (CCS) as the primary charging standard, meaning vehicles with NACS ports—such as Teslas—will need to use an adapter to connect to the chargers. Full compatibility with native NACS connectors is expected with a future hardware update.
Expanding Charging Capacity
The new charging stations, called Charging Outposts, are already starting to make a mark. Rivian’s second Charging Outpost just opened outside Joshua Tree National Park, with 12 Level 3 CCS chargers available to a wide range of EVs. These new stations also feature upgraded amenities, with the Joshua Tree location notably being twice the size of the company’s first Charging Outpost at Yosemite National Park.
In addition to offering rapid charging, the Charging Outposts are designed as more than just pit stops—they’re intended to be hubs for the community. Inside the Joshua Tree facility, drivers can purchase products ranging from organic jams to Rivian-specific accessories like roof racks and recovery boards for their vehicles. There’s even a Rivian vehicle on display, inviting potential customers to take a closer look at the brand's offerings. Visitors can enjoy a laid-back lounge environment, and a playground for kids makes it a family-friendly destination.
The Road Ahead
The addition of these next-gen charging stations is just one part of Rivian’s broader charging network strategy. The company aims to grow its network to more than 3,500 fast chargers across the U.S. and Canada in the coming years. While Rivian’s current network doesn’t have the scale of competitors like Tesla or Electrify America, the company is building a strong foundation for the future. Rivian’s plans include further expansion in Michigan, New York, Texas, Illinois, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Montana, with rumors suggesting the next Charging Outpost may open in The Hamptons.
The integration of NACS ports in Rivian’s vehicles starting in 2025 will further enhance the compatibility of its charging network with a broader range of EVs. However, the ultimate success of Rivian’s network will depend on the company’s ability to ramp up its infrastructure quickly and efficiently, especially in high-traffic areas and key locations like national parks, where EV drivers are likely to make the most use of the charging stations.
What Does This Mean for EV Drivers?
For EV owners, especially those driving non-Rivian models, Rivian’s commitment to making their Adventure Network accessible is a positive step forward. Though there are still some limitations in place, these next-gen stations offer an alternative to the long wait times and limited availability of charging stations in certain parts of the country. Rivian’s promise to expand its network and embrace inclusivity could pave the way for a more interconnected EV landscape, reducing range anxiety for drivers.
However, whether Rivian can scale its infrastructure quickly enough to meet the growing demand for EV charging remains to be seen. Charging networks are critical for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles, and Rivian’s ability to build out its network will play a crucial role in its long-term success in the EV market.
